The payments range in amount from $1 to $66,797, according to the city.Checks are regularly returned to the city because they are undeliverable based on the address the city has on file. After six months of remaining uncashed, those checks become unclaimed money.“We want to refund every single dollar of unclaimed money,” said Fanela Espiritu, the disbursements manager with the city’s Department of Finance. “A simple search is all it takes to verify if you were issued a check that has gone unclaimed. There is no charge to search the data or to file a claim.”Since this time last year, the city has returned nearly $800,000 to 166 recipients, with the average claim totaling $4,753.Residents can search the city’s unclaimed money report at sandiego.gov/finance/unclaimed, which is update each quarter. Money can not be claimed once it has been unclaimed for more than a year, according to the city. Residents have until June 21 to claim checks issued before April 1, 2018. We might owe you money! Anyone who has done business with the City in the past three years, including paying business taxes, could be owed part of nearly $1 million. Engadget on Wednesday confirmed that the phone was coming. The summer launch puts it squarely in between the launch of the Galaxy Fold, slated for April 26, and the Mate X, which will launch around the middle of the year, and further highlights the burgeoning trend of foldable phones. The devices garnered tons of buzz and were the talk of a reinvigorated MWC at a time when interest in phones were starting to mature.Unlike the Galaxy Fold or Mate X, which fold out into larger displays, the Razr’s design, based on schematics from a patent filing discovered by blog 91Mobiles, flips down into a smaller device like the original Razr. News • Forget the Galaxy Fold and Mate X, the Motorola Razr is the foldable phone to beat Phones The design has some advantages, including protection of the display once it’s folded down. If it mimics the original phone, it’ll be much more compact too. But it’s unclear if consumers want to fold away their display. Samsung and Huawei are banking on people preferring the option of the larger display. The original Razr was one of the most recognizable brands and helped drive Motorola’s success for years during the flip phone era. The ultra-thin phone first started off at the then-outrageous price of $500 as an exclusive phone for Cingular Wireless (now AT&T.) It was one of the most successful phones in history, selling more than 50 million units within two years of its debut.Motorola, however, couldn’t capitalize on the success of the Razr, and fell further behind as the industry moved on to more sophisticated phones. Google purchased Motorola in 2012, and then resold it two years later to Lenovo. Motorola has made its mark largely on well-outfitted budget phones like the Moto G franchise and its Moto Z franchise, which is upgradable to 5G via a Moto Mod attachment. Now, Lenovo has a chance to reinvigorate the Motorola brand with the Razr once more. The story originally published on Feb. 27 at 5:25 p.m. PT. The planet closest to the star is about 25% bigger than Earth and is likely rocky. This “super-Earth” is called TOI 270 b. Don’t expect to send colonists there. NASA described it as “oven-hot” thanks to its proximity to its star. The other planets, TOI 270 c and TOI 270 d, are likely closer to gas-giant Neptune in makeup. “Planet c and d might best be described as mini-Neptunes, a type of planet not seen in our own solar system,” said NASA.Enlarge ImageThis NASA infographic shows how TOI 70’s planets compare to Earth. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center/Scott Wiessinger The exoplanets’ discovery is just the start. “TOI-270 will soon allow us to study this ‘missing link’ between rocky Earth-like planets and gas-dominant mini-Neptunes, because here all of these types formed in the same system ” said Maximilian Günther, lead author of a paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy on Monday.TESS launched in 2018 and has been on a roll with exoplanet finds, including spotting a planet with three suns.Astronomers plan to take another look at TOI 270 after NASA’s next-generation James Webb Space Telescope launches, hopefully in 2021. TESS is great at spotting exoplanets of all kinds, but what we’re really excited about is finding planets that may have liquid water and could potentially support life. Don’t count TOI 270 out on that front. There may even be more planets in the system waiting to be discovered. NASA Space Share your voice 0 Now playing: Watch this: TESS before launch. NASA NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) just scored another science triumph with the discovery of three fascinating planets hanging out at a nearby star. One is a super-Earth, slightly bigger than our own planet. The other two are Neptune-like exoplanets, the likes of which you won’t find in our own solar system. The star is known as “TESS Object of Interest 270,” or TOI 270 for short. Its more formal name is “UCAC4 191-004642,” but that’s a mouthful. The star is 40% smaller than our sun and is also about a third cooler. It hangs out 73 light-years away, which qualifies it as a neighbor. Sci-Tech Originally published July 29, 10:39 a.m. PT 27 Photos This satellite could find alien life
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Maharashtra’s Wardha on April 1, 2019. The brightening prospects of Prime Minister Modi’s return to power and global cues are making FY20 a ‘buy on dips’ market.Twitter/BJPFollowing a record-setting March, the markets opened the financial year 2019-20 (FY20) on Monday with a strong bullish show confirming the technical view of FY20 as a ‘buy on dips’ market. The general elections whose results are due in the second half of May might induce some volatility, but experts consider the bullish theme to remain through the first half the year.Observers reckon that the prospects of the return to power of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Delhi have brightened with the failure of the main opposition Congress party led by its president Rahul Gandhi to attract major alliance partners. Opinion polls by different agencies have given a clear edge to the BJP and the return of a stable government. Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from Wayanad in Kerala, apart from his traditional Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, has added to the market conviction that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is not gaining traction in the BJP-dominated states in North India.A set of global cues including the receding clouds of trade war escalation between the US and China and lessening Brexit confusion is helping global indices and the Indian markets. Wall Street ended the March quarter on a strong note with S&P 500 posting its best quarterly gain since 2009, rising over 13 per cent. The Dow Jones rose 11.2 per cent posting its biggest quarterly rise since 2013, while the Nasdaq soared 16.5 per cent in its best quarter since 2012, a Reuters report said.A reflection of the general global sentiment was on the show on Monday when the Bombay Stock Exchange’s 30-share benchmark Sensex had a strong gap-up opening and set a new high after hitting a lifetime high of 39,028 points surpassing its previous high of 38,989 registered on August 29, 2018. Nifty50 has also been hovering near the record high of 11,760 after making an intra-day high of 11,738 points.Banking stocks continued their strong show from March into April with Nifty Bank registering a new high of 30,646 points in morning trade with Bank of Baroda, whose amalgamation with Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank created the second largest lender in terms of network and customer base, newly recapitalized Punjab National Bank (PNB), and ICICI Bank. China’s President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump arrive at a state dinner at the Great Hall of the People on November 9, 2017 in Beijing, China. The receding fears of a US-China trade war are helping to buoy global markets and Indian sentiment.Thomas Peter – Pool/Getty ImagesThe spread of the rally across sectors after a gap-up opening to the week points to the market strength that could support a continued rally even in this election quarter, according to some experts. The strong show of banking stocks is believed to be an indication of the market’s optimism of another rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India, whose monetary policy committee is set to meet next week.Market sources attribute the buoyancy to huge buying interest from foreign institutional investors (FII) in the cash segment. FIIs turned net buyers in the quarter with the infusion of more funds, market data show, with fresh fund infusion continuing through the last two consecutive months of the last fiscal year. March alone accounted for a net infusion of Rs 45,981 crore including a net Rs 33,980 crore in equities and Rs 12,001 crore in debt, according to data published by PTI. In February, the overseas players pumped in a net amount of Rs 11,182 crore in capital markets.
Kolkata: Water in some stretches of the Ganga in Bengal is so polluted that it is unfit for bathing, owing to the growing level of pollution.A report prepared by the state Environment department says that the pollution level in more than 10 stretches of the Ganga spreading over five districts including Kolkata is so high that the water is not safe for bathing anymore. The revelation comes at a time when the Centre has claimed the success of Namami Gange project. Garden Reach in Kolkata is one of the affected areas, while the other affected stretches fall under the districts of Howrah, Hooghly, North 24-Parganas, Nadia and Murshidabad. Also Read – Bose & Gandhi: More similar than apart, says Sugata BoseThe Namami Gange Project is an ambitious project of the Centre which integrates the efforts to clean and protect the Ganga river in a comprehensive manner. The project is officially known as Integrated Ganga Conservation Mission project. An earlier report prepared by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had revealed that apart from Bengal, the water of the river is also unfit for bathing in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. A senior official of the state Environment department said that Bengal is situated downstream and hence receives all the pollutants that flow along the river from the states that are located upstream. He also said that coliform bacteria, which is mainly found in sewage, is a major cause of concern. The bacterium is often found abundantly in the waters of Ganga. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataIt is often alleged that the most of the sewage treatment plants in Bengal do not have a proper mechanism to treat municipal waste water. Due to the non-functional sewage treatment plants (STPs), untreated wastewater of various municipalities gets discharged directly into the river. Such organic pollution in the river causes harm to both human beings as well as the aquatic life. According to a city doctor, untreated urban sewage contains pathogens that cause a variety of diseases, including diarrhea. The accumulation of organic pollutant stimulates microbial growth, leading to oxygen depletion and ultimately causing severe harm to the ecosystem of the river. Kalyan Rudra, chairman of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, said that due to the growing level of pollution, Hilsa fish and dolphins are found in lesser numbers in the Ganga compared to previous years.
Kolkata: Calling the 2019 Lok Sabha poll a “scandalous election”, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday demanded that electoral reforms should be carried out immediately and there should be a collegium to select the members of the Election Commission of India.Banerjee said the general election was “the most scandalous election in view of the muscle and money power that had been used. To stop this, electoral reforms should be made.” Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataIt may be mentioned that Banerjee had been demanding electoral reforms for over a decade. She reiterated that a thorough search should be conducted into the allegations of EVM tampering. Banerjee said a fact-finding committee should be set up immediately to find out how much money BJP had spent during the elections. “Sometime I hear that BJP had spent Rs 27,000 crore during the elections. Electoral bonds worth Rs 370 crore had been sold from the main branch of the State bank of India between May 6 and May 24. We do not know who the buyers are. I had told repeatedly during my election speeches that huge amounts of money were being smuggled to the districts by BJP leaders. What I had said then is now coming true,” she said. She said the committee should probe into the allegation that many Electronic Voting Machines had gone missing. She added that a collegium should be set up to select the Election Commission members. “Three members had been nominated and they conducted the election. All the Opposition parties had made several complaints but they had refused to listen,” Banerjee said.
