liked where things were going and then the owner flew in from LA and offered me the gig”Six houses for six episodes to be flipped were in the Twin Cities area but because LaVoi also runs his own business his schedule would only allow him to commit to four showsAs July rolled around it was lights camera action“We got a call sheet every night that said what we’d be working on the next day” said LaVoi who was one of five contractors chosen for the show He didn’t know any of them going into it“So we’d show up in the morning you’d get make up miked up and then go through a team meeting”As this team of contractors and their own teams of subcontractors attacked the massive project the show’s host famous Australian house flipper Cherie Barber would pop in and out to see what was going on The goal of the show is to take houses in need of serious updates and remodels and “flip” them into beautiful pieces of real estate that are sure to impress buyers willing to pay much much more than what they were purchased for Because the crews only got five days to make these incredible transformations happen schedules were approximately from 7:30 am to 9 pm“And then the night crews would come in like painters and electricians…there would be a whole army of guys getting after it all day and all night” said LaVoi who initially had doubts that they’d be able to flip a house in only five days“I didn’t know if it could be done but people are literally standing right there behind you ready to jump in with the next thing” said LaVoi who was also given a personal assistant“It was kind of the star treatment because our personal assistants would be right there to get you anything you needed whether it be something to eat or if you needed something like tools or materials they would just run right out to the store for you You don’t get that every day with this job” he laughedLaVoi said it was fun to get an inside look at how these shows are produced He says the challenging part was getting things done with cameras in their faces“They wanted to catch drama so if you’d find something that wasn’t according to plan they didn’t want you to just figure it out and get it done” said LaVoi “They wanted to get the camera on it and kind of make a big deal about it It was cool though; it just made it hard to work when you’ve got 10 15 people standing in front of you”LaVoi says he enjoyed being a part of the show and getting the opportunity to do work he normally wouldn’t get to do because it’s usually out of people’s budgetsThe first show airs Thursday Feb 4 at 10 pm on HGTV LaVoi says he’ll be seeing it for the first time when it airs which has him curious about how he did“I’m pretty good talking with people and not too shy around the camera so I think it went well but I know sometimes how you think you’re portraying yourself is different than how it really comes off” he laughed “So I’m a little nervous”LaVoi says the shows are being put through test markets right now to see what kind of feedback they get before the production company decides whether or not they want to do more but from what he hears so far that feedback has been positive“They did make mention of possibly signing up for more episodes this summer in Minneapolis so we’re just waiting to hear back about that” said LaVoi who says if that’s the case he plans on jumping on the opportunity againHe says he loved the crews and the other contractors chosen for the show“We got along very very well” said LaVoi “There were no big heads or jerks – they were really cool”LaVoi says he was excited to get to be a part of the show and now he gets to use the “As seen on HGTV” logo for his business It’s a marketing perk he says is huge“I know a guy who was on Bath Crashers (another HGTV show) and he says just having that logo did a lot for his business because people know you’re a good qualified contractor” he saidWhen asked if he would ever consider making a career out of doing TV shows like this LaVoi says he would definitely consider it but only if he knew he wouldn’t have to run his business and do the show Both gigs proved too consuming for the family guy“But I’m excited that I got to be a part of the show” said LaVoi “It was a challenge it was fun and I think what we ended up doing (with the houses) was really ratherThe message sent by two Republican-run committees was that if Democratic Gov Mark Dayton vetoes an agricultural policy bill his proposal to limit nitrogen fertilizer will be delayed until a year from now If Dayton signs the bill the agriculture chairman will allow the fertilizer rule to be implementedThe weekend committee actions have two significant implicationsFirst it is the first time the law has been used and if it is successful it could prompt other committees with executive branch disagreements to take action without the need to go through the full Legislature Second it is one in a series of efforts in which legislators or the governor have tried to leverage the other side via unrelated actionsThe Senate ag committee voted 8-2 late Saturday May 19 with the House following 9-6 on Sunday in favor of the resolution The agriculture chairmen need to notify specific people before the action takes effect and if Daton signs the ag bill they can decide not to implement the yearlong delayHouse Ag Chairman Paul Anderson R-Starbuck said the ag bill contains a provision that would give counties power to determine how much soil loss is allowed on a farmThe state Board of Water and Soil Resources is poised to establish statewide rules and rural Republicans insist such decisions must be left to local officialsThe committee votes the only actions needed to fulfill the law would delay the expected fertilizer rule until a year from now The administration is expected to approve the rule late this year or early in 2019 but the committee action means legislators may change the rule next yearThe law could be used by other committees in any subject area prompting Rep Tim Mahoney D-St Paul to say the vote will prompt legal action so the Supreme Court can decide "how much we can neuter the executive branch"The normally civil House agriculture committee erupted in a dispute late Saturday Democrats were critical of stopping the administration’s fertilizer rule"This is a cringe-worthy moment in time" Rep Jeanne Poppe D-Austin said "I am so stunned that we have devolved to this .
