Newborn dies after allegedly dumped in latrine

first_imgA 25-year-old woman is under Police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital following the death of her newborn baby, who was allegedly dumped in a pit latrine aback her Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara (WBD) home.Based on reports received, the woman gave birth on Thursday to a baby boy, but was unhappy, since she was under pressure from her family about not knowing the child’s father.After delivering the baby, the woman allegedly placed him in the garbage bin and instructed her five-year-old child to dispose of the newborn in the latrine at the back of the yard.Guyana Times understands that a relative subsequently went to use the toilet and realised there was blood present. Upon investigation, he saw the baby in the pit. At the time, the baby was still moving. He immediately raised an alarm and the baby was pulled out and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, but despite the efforts by doctors to save his life, he died. Initially, the woman claimed that the baby was not hers, but later admitted that she felt contractions and later gave birth. A Police source told Guyana Times that relatives informed the ranks at the La Grange Police Station of the incident and as such, the woman was arrested. The source related that during investigations, the seemingly confused woman told ranks that she went to use the toilet and it was then she delivered.He added that while interrogating the woman, the ranks realised that something was amiss. The woman was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was currently receiving medical attention while being under guard.
