“Jessica blocked a 5-meter shot early in the game and when they had the last 5-meter shot I think there was pressure on them because they didn’t get it past her the first time,” Rahn said. “That and a couple of key blocks in the end are what made the difference.” In the first quarter, Alexis Sulaeman scored twice and Laura Zeipke scored another to give Cajon a 3-1 lead. Maloof accounted for the Spartans’ solo score. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! “Yes, today we felt a lot of pressure because we didn’t expect the game to be so close,” said Maloof, whose team is in sole command of first place in league. “We realized after they scored the first goal and then we were down 3-1 at the end of the first quarter that we had to get our heads into the game.” Like Maloof, San Gorgonio coach Royce Rahn didn’t expect to get caught in such a heated contest. “Gosh yes, this was a great game, hard fought and the play on both sides was awesome,” Rahn said. “It came down to who had the ball last and could score.” Rahn praised goalie Jessica Phillips for stellar defensive play. It took a Maloof goal early in the second overtime to help the visiting San Gorgonio water polo team pull off an 8-7 win over Cajon to maintain its undefeated conference record Wednesday afternoon. On Monday, the Spartans (17-7 overall, 7-0 San Andreas League) defeated Cajon (8-14, 4-4) at home, 12-6. Wednesday was different. SAN BERNARDINO – San Gorgonio senior Jackie Maloof understood what a difference a day or two could make. But the result ended much the same.
