BELLFLOWER – Senior midfielder Tiya Gallegos’ goal at the 4-minute mark of the first half set the tone for Mayfair High girls soccer team against La Habra in the semifinals of CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs on Tuesday evening at Bellflower High. The Boston University-bound athlete scored two of the Monsoons’ three goals in the first half and duplicated the feat in the second half as second-seeded Mayfair won 6-1 to advance to the title game against top-seeded Sunny Hills. Despite this, the win brought the team’s win streak to 17-0-1 and improved its overall record to 25-4-2. “We knew this was going to be a big game for us,” Mayfair coach Sal Marroquin said. “We didn’t want them to overlook this game and start looking at the finals. We really focused on (La Habra). We knew what their strengths were. I just knew if we were prepared to play, we would come out victorious.” Senior forward Monique Cisneros dribbled the ball down the gut of the defense to put the Monsoons’ second goal on the board at 23rd mark, and Gallegos’ header off a corner kick from junior forward Nicole Hubbard gave them a 3-0 advantage at the break. At the opening of the second half, midfielder Briana Rhoades scored in front of the cage off a pass from the corner from Gallegos, who went on to add goals at 54th and 62nd minutes. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. I think it’s not more about the goal, but the buildup that came from the goal,” Gallegos said. “We just got to focus on what’s ahead of us, get healthy and get ready for the next game.” La Habra didn’t have any opportunities to break through the Monsoons’ stingy defense. But Tiffany Kracy’s goal with 30 seconds left broke Mayfair’s streak of five consecutive shutouts.
