Sanchez cut through chain-link fencing on the Broadland Avenue overpass and pulled himself through, according to CHP Sgt. Kevin Porter. A sheriff’s crisis negotiator was summoned to the scene. Local fire departments also arrived at the scene and deployed air bags on the freeway beneath the pedestrian overpass in case the man decided to jump, Mielke said. Traffic in the area was held up for over two hours as the CHP had to shut down the freeway during the incident, said CHP Officer Edmund Zorilla. Beliz said that though a person could theoretically be hospitalized involuntarily for an “indefinite” period if he posed an “imminent danger to himself or others,” that it would be highly unusual for someone to be held for much more than two weeks. “It is unusual for most people to be held for even more than the initial three-day period because they want to get out of there,” said Beliz. “If they say they are no longer suicidal and will get treatment once they get out it (is) hard to legally argue they should be kept there.” Authorities said that the only criminal charges Sanchez could face would be trespassing, but that it was unlikely he would be charged.
