Jim Cooper, of Cooper Farms was recognized with the Golden Egg Award. Others recognized at the event included the Stoller family from Van Wert County that received the Family Legacy Award, veterinarian Tim Barman, Ohio Representative Dave Hall and Ohio Representative Brian Hill.One of the key issues facing Ohio’s egg producers are the shifting whims of consumer demand. Many of the companies who buy Ohio eggs are planning to require cage-free production in the near future.“There is a lot of uncertainty, but the discussion continues on the announcements coming forward that a lot of the companies that we are supplying are going to transition to cage-free products somewhereJim Cooper, of Cooper Farms, was recognized with the Golden Egg Award.between 2018 and 2025,” said Lisa Timmerman, with Cooper Farms, who serves as president of the Ohio Poultry Association. “The industry is still looking forward to how we are going to get there, what systems we are using and how long it will take us to get there. As we look at the transition, we look at the systems out there. There are multiple types of systems for cage-free they are not all the same. There is a colony system where birds are on the floor or an aviary-type system where birds can move up and down vertically through the system. Those are some of the decisions companies have to make in terms of how far they want to go in this transition.”The poultry industry has a history of being responsive to consumer demands and Timmerman said that trend will continue moving forward.“As we talk with consumers, they do not necessarily have all of the information they need to know what cage-free is, but as poultry farmers, we are going to produce what the consumers want, whether it is cage-free, caged eggs, brown, white, vegetarian fed, or organic,” she said. “Our focus is on producing aDr. Tim Barman was presented his award by OPA president Lisa Timmerman.safe, affordable, wholesome food and meeting the needs of the consumer whatever they might be. If cage-free is what they are demanding, that is what we are going to move to produce.”A trip down the grocery store aisle quickly reinforces this point.“If you look in the supermarket you see a wide variety of products. We have a pretty open mind,” Timmerman said. “When we look at what the consumers are demanding, I think we are definitely open to their values and beliefs. We have core values and beliefs within our family farms and so do our customers. Whether it is cage-free or organic, whatever their values are, we don’t have a problem producing it.”Representative Dave Hall offered some comments after being recognized by the OPA.

The conference was made possible through the support of program sponsors, Farm Credit Mid-America, Ohio Beef Council, Ohio Corn & Wheat Growers Association, Ohio Soybean Council and the Rick Malir & Bonnie Coley-Malir Beef Leadership Fund.YCC kicked off Thursday evening at the Ronald McDonald House of Columbus where participants were able to tour the house and learn about its mission. Attendees also had the opportunity to network over a beef dinner with members of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s Board of Directors, program sponsor representatives and other industry professionals. Vice President of Wendy’s Protein Procurement and Innovation, Quality Supply Chain Co-op, Inc. (QSSC), Dr. Henry Zerby, served as the guest speaker for the evening and shared his thoughts on the future of the beef industry and some of the challenges it faces moving forward.On day two of YCC, conference attendees participated in a mini-Beef 509 session with Dr. Lyda Garcia, assistant professor of meat science for The Ohio State University’s Department of Animal Sciences. This hands-on experience included learning how meat is graded, the fabrication of wholesale and retail cuts, and other issues that can impact beef quality and pricing. Participants also viewed the champion beef carcasses from the 2019 Ohio State Fair and visited The Ohio State University’s football practice facilities.Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) staff then discussed the value of membership and the role OCA has in legislative and regulatory issues; participants also heard from Executive Director of Government Affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), Allison Rivera, about the latest federal issues impacting the cattle industry. The afternoon was spent at the Ohio Statehouse where participants met with Representative Darrell Kick (District 70). Representative Kick, who sits on the House Agricultural and Rural Development Committee, spoke about current Ohio legislation affecting the beef cattle industry and answered questions from the group.That evening, participants were hosted at the home of program sponsor, Rick Malir and Bonnie Coley-Malir. While there, attendees were able to network with one another and learn more about the couple’s agricultural roots and their passion for the beef industry and professional development.The final day of the conference was kicked off by Ohio Beef Council (OBC) staff, with a discussion regarding OBC’s role in checkoff collection and beef promotional efforts in Ohio. Attendees also participated in a spokesperson training program coordinated by Director of Grassroots Advocacy and Spokesperson Development for NCBA, Ryan Goodman. Goodman led participants through a media training session that strengthened their communication skills, encouraged attendees to tell their beef production story and helped them become more effective cattle industry leaders.The purpose of YCC is to offer emerging Ohio beef industry leaders and young producers the opportunity to build their own leadership skills as they network with beef industry leaders, government officials, businesses and media. The weather system that brought the front also triggered some wrap around moisture that continues in some areas today. We look for this light spotty moisture, a mixture of rain sleet and wet snow, to continue to rotate through the state for at least part of the day before finally exiting to the east. The strong north flow coming across Lake Erie also means we have to watch for lake effect precipitation, especially in far NE Ohio. Moisture ends by midday to early afternoon in far western OH, if not sooner, but may linger into mid or even late afternoon in eastern areas. WE do finally dry down by sunset in all areas of the state.Partly sunny, chilly and dry tomorrow and Wednesday. We can see a bit of lake effect snow fire off again overnight Wednesday night, and at times the clouds will spread to dominate most of Ohio. However, snow totals look minor, and will be most concentrated in far NE Ohio, in the typical lake effect areas. Back to sunshine and some clouds for Thursday and Friday, with no new precipitation.High pressure parks over the eastern corn belt for the weekend, drawing down chilly air on north flow ahead of the High on Saturday, but then south flow develops on the backside of the high for Sunday, and we can see temps climb, perhaps even to normal and above normal levels. That south flow will feed into our next front, making it a bit stronger.Rains arrive Monday and continue through Tuesday of next week. Combined totals can be from .25″-1″ with coverage at 100% of the state. Rain totals will be split pretty evenly across both days. We do go drier for next Wednesday, and stay dry then into the following weekend. That means we have only 1 truly good threat of significant moisture over the next 2 weeks, and that happens early next week. 10 day liquid equivalent precipitation totals are at right.
